Opportunity at a Glance

The Senior Certified Veterinary Technician (SCVT) will have graduated from an accredited college and hold a certification in veterinary medicine. A desire to work with a variety of both large and small animals such as horses, cows, sheep, donkeys, dogs and mice is essential. A successful applicant will design and implement animal enrichment programs for all species in the Animal Care program and provide veterinary technical support to the Manager of Animal Care, the Attending Veterinarian, and the Principal Investigators (P.I.).

The SCVT will report any problems of animal well-being to the Manager of Animal Care, will assist in the veterinary medical care and husbandry along with the upkeep of all records for animals currently being used and housed at RUSVM. The SCVT will assist the Manager of Animal Care with the supervision and support of all kennel staff and pasture personnel along with the development , refinement and monitoring of pasture, kennel and vivarium Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).

Some on–call weekend, holiday, and break rotation work is required.

Responsibilities

 

  • Operate in accordance with animal care and use guidelines outlined by Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) and U.S. Animal Welfare Regulations.
  • Serve as day-to-day liaison between the Manager of Animal Care, P.I., kennel and pasture personnel.
  • Implement and monitor behavior and treatment plans for all RUSVM animals.
  • Prepare examination or treatment areas for procedures.
  • Restrain and/or hold animals for procedures.
  • Provide postoperative care, administration of medications.
  • Ensure that the animal areas and rooms are kept clean and in accordance with IACUC regulations and are organized and well maintained at all times.
  • Assist in humane euthanasia of animals when needed.
  • Facilitate security of animal facilities as well as the animals.
  • Maintain a well-ordered file of current Animal Care SOP’s and may assist in writing and reviewing procedures.
  • Maintain a well-ordered file of current IACUC-approved research and teaching protocols and policies.
  • Assist the Manager of Animal Care in meeting the requirements of RUSVM Environmental Health & Safety.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed animal records.
  • Ensure regular maintenance of instruments and equipment logs which are utilized in the animal housing/laboratories.
  • Perform quality checks to ensure all aspects of Animal Care are within IACUC guidelines.
  • Perform regular inventory of basic supplies, order and stock supplies as needed.
  • Completes other duties as assigned.



Qualifications

  • Associate or bachelor degree in veterinary technology is required.
  • Certification and 2-5 years’ experience working as a veterinary technician in the field
  • Valid driver’s license is required.
  • Strong skills in Microsoft Office required with Avimark experience a plus
  • Skilled in handling and restraint of large animals is essential with small animals being extremely beneficial.
  • Be capable of following and adhering to SOP’s.
  • Ability to communicate professionally in a corporate veterinary medical environment.
  • Flexibility to work weekends, holidays, and after-hours emergencies.
  • Demonstrate respect for colleagues, students and animals.
  • Be adaptable and flexible.
